Friday Follies~This & That

Due to illness of just about everyone in the house this will be a fairly lame Friday Follies. With that disclaimer out of the way here is what I have.

Interesting and Informative Blog on local real estate conditions-New Smyrna Real Estate.

Halifax Urban Ministries has opened a new office in New Smyrna Beach. They relocated from the First United Methodist Church to a larger site at 715 Canal St. This office, which is the agency's fifth in Volusia County, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and serves 800 to 1,000 people a month with food and financial assistance.

The Atlantis Bistro on Flagler Ave will be reviewed quite favorably in the Orlando Sentinel this weekend. You can read it now here. My brother and I have had lunch there several times and it has always been excellent with great service.

Finally, I received a quite nasty email from a local reader who feels I should not talk about our school system. I am not sure why he/she is not outraged by the budget cuts and nonsense that is going on but apparently he/she is not. It states:

"you should shut up about Volusia County Schools, we do not want higher taxes and we don't care about program cuts" (I am guessing they have no children and don't care about the future of our state or country) They go on to say "Your kid does not even attend Volusia County so why do you care?"

Let me tell you why I care, first let me correct you, my daughter attends Coronado Elementary School. My son also went to Coronado, I made the personal decision to send my son to Warner Christian Academy for 6th grade. Mainly because of the quality of education, class size and budget cuts. This was before the additional millions was taken from our children and teachers this year. They are looking at losing music, art, sports, academic programs and in some schools are being forced to sit in a gymnasium when teachers call in sick with no academic instruction. The public education system is in a shambles and no one in our government seems willing to be accountable for the disaster and take steps to fix it. This is why I care. My parents pay for my son to attend private school or he would not be able to attend. This is why I care. His educational experience this year has been excellent and he loves school, even though he gets up 90 minutes earlier than his friends to catch a bus to Daytona at 7am and does not have early release every Wednesday, no teacher work days off of school and it is a fairly strict atmosphere. No complaints from him. Because of all those extra educational hours they have built in they did not have to make up the Tropical Storm Fay days and had the whole week of Thanksgiving off. It is not perfect but it has been an overall positive experience.

So in conclusion to my anonymous reader. I will continue to harp on the school system when appropriate and share information as I come across it. I chose not to publish your entire email in the event that you might be embarrased by some of your grammar and spelling. There is a tool called spellcheck that will help you with that. My children know how to use it...they learned it in school. This is why I care.

This & That

Did you know the Chamber of Commerce offers computer classes, they have one on Friday, March 6th from 9am-11am on Computer Basics. It is 10.00 for Chamber Members and 20.00 for non-members. Also our Volusia County Public Library Offers all sorts of classes and events at the different branches.

I had the pleasure of utilizing Twilight Pediatrics at Bert Fish last night. There was literally no wait, the staff was extremely pleasant and it was a positive experience, as positive as you can have with a sick kid.

This Sunday March is the Bluegrass Bash For a Cure, it begins at 3PM at Beachside Tavern. It is a benefit for The Relay For Life and features The Pickin’ Kind and The Pot Likkers, special guest star Ben Prestage, on stage at 7:30pm. Donations accepted at the door. Hosted by the Cancer Bustin’ Bankers.

Java Jungle in Port Orange has a great friday night alternative to the bar scene. It's a great place to meet and get the evening started or to wind down after dinner, the theater or a movie. Enjoy a signature coffee beverage and enjoy dessert on us. That's right, free dessert for everyone. It is from 5pm-10pm.

They are located at:

4606 Clyde Morris Blvd.
Ravenwood Square
Port Orange, FL

More events to come, we have had a rough week, sick kids, dogs killing squirrels and much more fun!

Pets At The Beach

For all you dog lovers there is a place in New Smyrna you can take your pet.

Smyrna Dunes Park is 73 acres located on the northern tip of the New Smyrna Beach peninsula where you and your dog can enjoy the beach. There is 2 miles of boardwalk with views of the Indian River, Ponce Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. A great view of the lighthouse while walking. Meet other dog lovers and see a wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles, marine life and vegetation in their natural habitat. You must keep your pet on a leash at all times, I have seen dogs loose early in the morning before there is too many people. It is 3.50 per car but you can walk over for free.

Thre is also a dog park at 2641 Paige Avenue. This park features concrete play areas separated for large and small dogs and shelter and a dog water fountain. Directions.

Several condos including Bouchelle Island, Eastwind Villas and Oceanwalk accept pets, Coquina, Longboard and Night Swan Bed & Breakfast accept pets and several rental homes do as well. Contact me for more information and I will put you in touch with them.

If you lose your pet while you are here we have two local animal shelters:

Southeast Volusia Humane Society
1200 S. Glencoe Road
386-428-9860

Edgewater Animal Shelter
Public Safety Blvd.
386-424-2456
Enjoy the day!

Monday Mayhem

It is a bit chilly here at the beach today. But according to Just Weather and my new Twitter friend Daytonamarc it will be warming thru the week. Monday did not start out great, my daughter did not want to get up, "it is too cold Mom", yea yea yea, she does not want to get up when it is 80 so cold is relative. I would love to see her if she lived in say, New Jersey or Wisconsin.....would not be pretty. My son is sick, has been all weekend, it is like living with a harp seal in the house, he is coughing so bad.

We will have the weekend events later in the week when I figure out what they are, one note. One of our readers, Jill (thanks Jill) has let me know there is a Farmers Market in Edgewater, it is called Laurino's Fresh Produce and is located in the old Curves in Edgewater. This is 2102 S. Ridgewood Ave. I will try and find out there hours and let you know, they have a farm in Samsula so it is all locally grown!

There is now one Curves in the immediate area and it is in the K-Mart Plaza on 44.

I had one addition to the Money Saving Links from yesterday. Cents to get Debt Free. She has great tips, I read the Walgreens 101 section and learned alot.

The bikers rolled into town on Friday, made my very first visit to Pub 44 on Friday night, it was a pretty tame experience. I found all the bikers we talked to to be friendly, respectful and very nice. For the most part they said they preferred our town to Daytona because it is "low-key" compared to Daytona. Good for New Smyrna Beach I would say.

Have a great week and keep those links and local information coming. Remember to support your local business!
