Edgewater Animal Shelter

There are exciting things happening at the Edgewater Animal Shelter.  On August 1, 2012, Dr. Ginger Bryant from Glencoe Veterinary Clinic will be taking over the Edgewater Animal Shelter.  This is good news for local animals and their owners!

The name for the brand new organization is the Volusia Society for Aid to Animals (VSAA) and the Edgewater Animal Shelter. They will offer low cost spay/neuter services along with low cost shots on a daily basis by appointment.  Going forward there are plans to operate regular scheduled veterinary hours as well.

This will not change the great service the Animal Control personnel and the Shelter staff provide the community. In fact it will enhance the programs they are able to offer, giving the Shelter much more versatility to compete with the bigger shelters and vet clinics. It also gives all local animal lovers another choice in caring for their pets.

The Shelter is located at 605 Mango Tree Drive in Edgewater. You can contact them at 424-2442

On June 30th the Shelter will be holding a low shot clinic from 9am until 12 noon. Check their Facebook Page for prices and products available.

Meet Justin Kennedy

Politics in Volusia County has never been more important. We face a myriad of issues and need solutions. The bulk of my readers are in County Council District 3. One of the candidates is Justin Kennedy. Justin is currently a City Commissioner in the city of Edgewater. He owns a business in southeast Volusia County, his children go to school here and his extended family lives here. He has a vision for our county and I believe he will get things done for us just as he has in Edgewater.

I do not have anything negative to say about his opponents which are Jim Hathaway and Deb Denys, Jim has been on the New Smyrna City Council for a very long time and Deb Denys is a respected business woman in New Smyrna Beach. However, I know Justin Kennedy and his family personally and count them among my closest friends. I have talked at length with him about the problems we have in our area of the county, about the road blocks the county faces and his plans to navigate through that to get us moving in the right direction.

Justin is not a career politician and his responsibility and allegiance lies solely with the people of southeast Volusia County. The business owners, firefighters, teachers, police, retail and hospitality workers and the children who go to school here, that are the future of our area.

If you would like to take some time and meet Justin and get to know him and what he stands for, I invite you to attend a get together at Crabby Joe's at the Sunglow Pier on Tuesday, June 26th. It will run from 5:30 until 7:30 and drinks and light refreshments will be served.

You can RSVP to 386-314-9180 or email me directly. I will be there and look forward to meeting you!

Crabby Joe's is located at 3701 South Atlantic Avenue - Daytona Beach Shores

Cider Anyone?

I love seeing the ad’s and people who get really excited about the Official Start of Summer Memorial Day weekend…here in Florida it is summer about 8 months of the year!

Part of our summer is switching to lighter, more refreshing drinks! I am a huge hard cider fan, really if I drink it is my first choice, white wine being a pretty close second. Michelob Ultra now has a great alternative to either one and it has about one third less calories than either my former favorite cider or that glass of Pinot Grigio. The cider is also gluten-free and 4% alcohol.

I was skeptical as I love my formerly favorite cider but the folks over at Blogher asked a bunch of us to try it out and write about it for the Michelob ULTRA Light Cider page on BlogHer.com. How could I resist an offer like that?

So off to Big B Liquors in Edgewater I went..you can find the cider locally on the Sponsors’ Site. I decided to get a couple of opinions so a couple of my neighbors came over to give it a whirl.

This is the first cider Anheuser-Busch is distributing in the US, and according to the press release it, “ is ideal for year-round enjoyment and provides adult drinkers a light, refreshing alternative to white wine, champagne and heavier ciders.”

Yes, I agree with all that, it is very light and refreshing, in fact it is delicious, the best part (besides the reduced calories) is it is not overwhelmingly sweet. It is perfect for a hot day in the sun or with any meal that you would enjoy white wine. I put mine in a pretty glass cause that's how we roll!

I am not a beer drinker but some of my friends are and they gave it the thumbs up as well. I was fairly surprised about that since most beer drinkers are not huge cider fans.

So it is safe to say that you can grab a Michelob Ultra Cider, hit the beach, the pool, the park, and get on with your summer!

Which favorite summer meal or activity do you think would go best with Michelob ULTRA Cider?
