Volusia Beaches App

There is a really cool new App in the iTunes store for Volusia County Beaches. It has each of the beaches and you can access beach conditions, the beach cam, concessions and all sorts of things. Go to the iTunes store and search Volusia Beaches, it is free to download!

Saturday is National Prescription Take Back Day across the nation. This is a great opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinet without throwing unused drugs in the landfill or into the water system. Locally you can return your unused prescriptions at the New Smyrna Beach Police Department on Saturday, September 29th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The Police Department is located at 246 Industrial Drive. If you need more information contact 386-424-2249.

Team Logan Bake Sale

I am proud to be part of the committee that is organizing the World's Largest Bake Sale in honor of Logan Wight. Logan was a wonderful little boy who died of a rare brain cancer. The proceeds from this bake sale will benefit the children's cancer charity, Cookies for Kids Cancer. In honor of Logan.

You can read Logan and his families story on his mother's blog. I read it. The entire thing. It took me several sittings to get through it, it is impossible to read without shedding many tears and thanking the Lord for the blessings you have.

The hope is to raise $26,000 for Children's Cancer Research. The other goal is to be the World's Largest Bake Sale and get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

The sale is scheduled for October 13th and will be held on Canal Street in the Chamber Parking Lot. The fun starts at 12 noon and runs until 8pm.

You can help. You can bake or donate baked goods, we currently have about 7500 baked goods donated, we need 10,000. Do you have tents or tables? Would you like to volunteer on the day of the event? You can come on down to Canal Street and purchase some baked goods or you can just give us money. Money is good!

If you would like to bake, have some tables or would like some great recognition for your business email me or call Kathy at 386.957.4299.

Seriously..No School Tomorrow?

So what is everyone doing on the teacher workday tomorrow?

It has been a long week around here...Actual things heard in my house this week:

Mom: Do you have homework?
Curtis: What do you mean?
Mom: Seriously, what do you mean what do I mean?
Curtis: Ummm, I don't know let me think and I will let you know.

Mom: Please unload the dishwasher.
Curtis: The Dishwasher? (insert head cocked quizzical look)
Mom: Yes, you know the square box in the kitchen that washes dishes.
Curtis: Oooooohhhhh, you mean the dishwasher...

This is just a sampling of the torture that I am forced to endure as the mother of a 15 year old boy. It is no wonder I am crazy. We won't even talk about the girl child. Have a great weekend!

The Belong Community Outreach Women's Group is holding Fundraiser to benefit the Helping Hands & Hearts for Hunger Organization. This group assists our local food banks in providing food to those in our community that may need a little extra help.

This event is being hosted by Flip Flops, who deserves a little recognition for stepping up! This was originally to be held at JJ Fins, which has closed it's doors. The awesome folks at Flip Flops
generously came forward and offered to hold this in their restaurant on 3rd Avenue in New Smyrna Beach.

The cost is $10.00 and kids under 3 are free. There will be live music all day and a kids zone for the young ones. This is a great event that will directly support local food banks.

The event is September 30th from 11:00 am - 7:00 pm.

Green Flamingo Organics

It is no big secret I love the Farmer's Market. We have several to choose from here in our area. The Green Market in Port Orange at the Pavilion which should be opening this fall, no date has been announced yet. There is the weekly market at the Volusia County Fairgrounds. That is every Wednesday. The Saturday morning markets at Hawk's Park in Edgewater, Sams Ave in New Smyrna Beach and at Norwood's Fine Seafood on the beachside in New Smyrna Beach.

I have been to them all, the most convenient and my favorite is the one at Norwood's. It is relatively new but has everything I want. This week I discovered one of the vendors I visit with weekly is Green Flamingo Organics. I was chatting with the gentleman who runs this one and got some great information on where they get their produce, milk, eggs etc. Much of it is grown right here in Oak Hill and now in New Smyrna Beach off of Corbin Park. Much of their vegetables are seasonal so when it is in season they have it. Today I got cucumbers, mushrooms and some of the best sprouts I have ever had. All were locally grown. I also got some fabulous lettuce that was grown in a local hydroponic greenhouse. Also organic. If you are thinking this must have cost a fortune, you would be wrong. I had a grocery bag full of produce and I spent less than 15.00.

They also open their farm stand on Thursday afternoon's so you can visit them them. Details on their website.

You can also get fresh locally grown produce from Agony Acres, they are located in Samsula and are at Norwood's each Saturday. Today he had some terrific fresh green beans. Grown right down the road in Samsula.

You can also find Little Foodie and her organic baby food, organic coffee, kettle corn, orchids, fresh bread, fresh shrimp and more at Norwood's. Check it out!
