Independence Day Fireworks

Fireworks! 

Port Orange will hold their July 4th celebration at the City Center, the fun starts at 5:30 pm with Fireworks starting at 9:00 pm. There will be a Kid's Zone, Water Zone, Bounce Houses, a classic car show and entertainment. 

Edgewater will hold their Fireworks at George R. Kennedy Memorial Park. The party starts at 5:00 pm. There is entertainment, food vendors and more. The fireworks go off at dusk.

New Smyrna Beach holds their fireworks in the Canal Street area. Events start at 10:00 am with a Scavenger Hunt. The annual Bed Races go off at 2:00 pm. There will be food trucks and entertainment. The Fireworks go off at about 9:15 pm. (or whenever Edgewater finishes)

Sundae 5K & Beach Obstacle Course

Don't miss a 5K race like no other! Come join 400+ of your friends, family, and fellow runners/walkers at this chip-timed race. Registration starts 7:00 am, race start at 8:00 am. This race is appropriate for all runners of all skill levels and ages. Medals in 84 categories and two overall plaques will be awarded. There are free t-shirts, a social, and a post race make-your-own-sundae bar for runners, because who doesn't want ice cream for breakfast? Sign up here for the race

Are you ready to challenge yourself the way our nation's finest do? 

Beach Boot Camp Obstacle Course, hosted by the Florida National Guard will let you learn what it's like to "get fit" the armed forces way! 

Located right on the beach at Flagler Avenue, participants will be able to engage in variety of different individual fitness challenges all part of an obstacle course based upon the actual US Army PT test! 

Run for fun, or compete in a variety of age / gender divisions (M/F, ages 12 and under; 13-18; 19-35; 36-50; and 51 and up.) The course includes a shuttle run, pull ups, low crawl, tires, pushups, and sit ups. There will be giveaways for all competitors and prizes for top finishers! Florida National Guardsmen will be standing by for "extra motivation", just in case you need any!

Registration for this free event will be on a walk-up basis the day of the event.

Happy Father's Day

My father loved butterflies and took tons of pictures of them. He used to sit in his yard and wait for them to come to take pictures. Yesterday, I was sitting on my porch and looked over and there was one hanging out in my pot of marigolds. I have no idea how this little guy got in, the porch is screened. I am choosing to believe it was my Dad dropping in to say hello for Father's Day.

Aqua Park Summer

Aqua Park, the volunteer run, community pool at 600 Eaton Road, Edgewater has recently enlisted the help of several members of the New Smyrna Beach High School Swim Team to man the Front Desk from 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm thus enabling it to extend its hours during the summer vacation. They are now open ALL day from 7:00 am - 7:30 pm  Monday to Friday from now until August 21st! 

Open swimming is available to the public for $5 at any time, please check the website for details on their Water Aerobics Classes ; Swim Lessons and Junior & HS Swim Team practice schedules.

Kook 386-Teen Center

I am sure many of you have heard or read about KOOK 386 Teen Rec Center in Edgewater. The idea for this center was brought to life after Michele Tuck's daughter took her own life. Michele wanted to create a place where teens could go and just hang out with no fear of bullying, peer pressure and all that nonsense that kids deal with.

The center is located at 116 N. Old County Rd in Edgewater. They offer all kinds of activities and it is all free. Coming up is Yoga, Art Classes sponsored by the Hub and a whole lot more. They are a 501(c)3 and rely on donations and community support to stay open.

In that effort one of their supporters has set up a GoFundMe page, and the ladies of BELONG are holding a Fundraiser this Saturday. Details are below. There will be food and plenty of prizes, silent auction and our friend DJ Big Tom will be spinning the tunes. It will be a good time for an important cause! 

I Forgot the Orchid

Just a quick story...

A couple of days ago one of my worker dudes that helps me around here said "hey, you know there is an orchid hanging on the back fence." I thought to myself, "self, you forgot the freakin orchid." My father loved orchids, and this orchid was his favorite, in the months before he got sick he would say to me, "I need to repot that orchid." So I bought him a couple pots and some orchid potting stuff, he couldn't remember what he did with it, so I bought some more. He never did it.

When he was in the hospital he said repeatedly "make sure you water my plants." I knew I would forget that orchid so I hung it on the fence so it would get watered, have some sun all that jazz. I thought, "I will bring it back in when he comes home." Well, obviously he didn't come home and I forgot the freakin orchid.

So my Dad's prized orchid is in bad shape. Leaves all yellow, looks terrible, and still needs to be repotted, probably 3-4 plants in this pot. I also found all the potting stuff.

I brought it onto the porch, watered it and fed it and noticed it had a couple buds on it. No way this thing could bloom I thought, no one has looked in its direction in 3 months. This morning....

Need Alterations?

I get messages every week from people asking me about alterations. Where can you get them in New Smyrna Beach? I have the answer! There is a new bridal shop on Canal Street, Bridal LTD Gallery.

My son had to have his new suit altered in time for all the graduation festivities, so we went on down to their shop on Canal Street (my teenage son was thrilled) and met with Holly. She did her thing and told me to pick it up on Tuesday, it was Thursday so I was overjoyed with that! Holly was super nice and even made a teenage boy surrounded by wedding gowns feel at ease!

My son went and picked it up, it is perfect, she even pressed and lightly starched his shirts for him saving me a trip to the dry cleaner (I don't iron, what is starch?)

Highly recommend...and they have a great selection of gorgeous gowns in the shop as well, so if you are in the market for a wedding dress skip the trip to Daytona or Orlando and check them out.

The 23rd Annual Bike & Bar Tour

The 23rd Annual Bike & Bar Tour is on June 20th. This crazy & fun event started with two riders and has grown to over 2500! The tour starts at JB's Fish Camp at 11:00 am. Stops include Moe's Sea Vista Tiki Bar, Off The Hook, PJ's, Beachside Tavern, Gnarley Surf Bar, OM Bar, Flagler Tavern, The Breakers, Barracuda's and Peanuts.

The caravan leaves JB's about 11:30 and heads North, don't be late if you want to be in the group photo!
