Edgewater/New Smyrna Beach Memorial Day

I took my children to the Memorial Day Ceremony in Edgewater this morning. It was standing room only at the Edgewater/New Smyrna Beach Cemetery. It gave us the opportunity to thank those that are responsible for our freedom and was a very nice ceremony. We had a Vietnam Veteran sitting behind us who thanked my kids for coming to honor them, I thought that was very nice since it was about him not them. Many thanks to all of our Veterans and Military around the world.

Goodbye Coronado

I was sitting in the pick-up line watching the kids from Coronado getting ready to be picked up today. I have done this just about every day for the last three years....in just a few days I will make my last trip to the little school by the beach. My baby is going to middle school. She is thrilled, I am terrified.

I was watching the kindergarten and first grade heading for their cars, giving their teachers hugs and still so excited about school, even this close to the end of the year. I have watched Coach Heer high five every kid as they walk into school every day, I have heard about Mr Hardock and his art projects, Mrs Wright and her music and talent shows, reading counts and who has how many points, I have heard about dodgeball and school lunches and bee stings and my best friend is mad at me and so many other elementary school happenings.... I have chatted with teachers, media specialists, secretaries and janitors over the last three years. Mary Jo and I have joked and laughed and she has made sure I know the schedule for 3 years....What a wonderful school Coronado Beach Elementary has proven to be. I will miss the parents who can feel comfortable to say, "hey get my kid" and no one questions it...the comfort you only get from a small, happy school where everyone knows everyone..

I hear the principal is moving to Indian River Elementary in Edgewater, they will be lucky to have her, she is an advocate for the children, the teachers and the parents. From this point forward Coronado will share a leader with Chisolm Elementary. I hope that is not the writing on the wall that they will be closed in the future as a result of the disaster that is Florida schools. In the meantime I am certain that the teachers and staff there will rise to the occasion and continue to provide the wonderful and awesome experience to all children that my daughter experienced in her time there.

Goodbye Coronado, I will miss my mad dash there every afternoon....I will miss the rutted dirt road, the 15 mph speed limit, the flood every time it rains, the chattering child telling me about her day...I will miss it all and all of you. Thank you and God Bless!

Here is a really nice recap of the Balloon Fest that was held this past weekend at the New Smyrna Beach Airport. I took some time and read through it and they have some great local information and news, coupons and my favorite...the Storm Track page. Check them out even if you don't live in Spruce Creek there is plenty there to enjoy!

Aqua Park

A friend of mine asked me to run by the Aqua Park in Edgewater today to get her a schedule for summer swim lessons....I said "what Aqua Park?" Much to my surprise there is an awesome pool right on Eaton Rd in Edgewater. I stopped by and chatted with the owner John, who is a terrific man with a beautiful facility. They have an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. They offer several sessions of swimming lessons for all ages. Eight lessons is $56.00, that is a deal. The Aqua Park also offers a summer swim league, private pool party rentals, water therapy, water aerobics classes, lap swimming and a whole lot more. You can give them a call at 386-428-5074 or stop by their facility at 600 Eaton Rd in Edgewater.

Marine Discovery Center

Here are some things happening at our Marine Discovery Center. You may or may not know they have been raising funds to refurbish and repair "Discovery" the Center's pontoon boat. Amazingly enough through large and small donations they have raised 25,000 for this effort. You can read about it here. They still need help...my children and many of our local children have spent many hours on this boat and at the Marine Discovery Center....let's help them out.

Bird Rescue Volunteers are needed~on Saturday, May 22nd there will be a class held at the MDC classroom at 9am for all those interested in helping. You will learn techniques for bird rescue and may be asked to dedicate time for this purpose. Please consider giving your time to this effort. Around Town~Weekend Events

A few things to do around town this weekend....

Pancakes in the Park at Old Fort Park on Saturday from 7am-11am. This benefits the Historical Society.

Farmer's Market on Canal Street beginning at 730am.

Chase's on the Beach is holding their first annual Waves & Wheels Pro Invitational. Surfing, skating, fashion show and prizes. They also have a Reggae Brunch on Sundays from 10am-3pm.

Skyline 1949, formerly Stella's Skyline has officially closed. Their recording said they were remodeling, now the number forwards to the corporate headquarters. Big FOR LEASE sign in the yard...Sad that nothing can make it in that location.

Norwood's has a brand new e-club, sign up and get free stuff. I signed up today and got a free appetizer.

Anyway, I searched about for things to do and our weekend at the beach is pretty lame...well as lame a weekend living at the beach can be...I suggest, hit the beach and eat a meal at a local restaurant! Take a walk on Flagler or Canal Street and buy a few trinkets from a local merchant....hit the Farmers Market for some lettuce and then go have a Pancake in the Park...Blue Crabs are in at Oak Hill Seafood Coop....

5 Good Things

I was catching up on some of my favorite blogs and websites today and noticed one of my favorite organizers had a link to Whisker Graphics on her Facebook page. This is an old post from July of 2009 but it sure is relevant today. Can you think of 5 Good Things that happened today? How about everyday....try it. I challenged my kids in the car tonight to give me 5 good things that happened today...it was very quiet for a minute. They had to think.....hard..here we go:

My 11 year old Daughter:

1. had cheese for lunch (that would make me happy too)
2. played with Tank (the dog)
3. no homework
4. sunburn is getting better
5. played dodgeball in recess

My 13 year old son:

1. played baseball
2. won the baseball game (yes there is a theme here)
3. had good food
4. Love my Mom (ok he is a suck-up)
5. Sam's back

Life is so simple when you are a kid. So I have printed them the booklet in Whisker Graphic's post and we are going to do this for the rest of the week and see if it gets easier. They will be thinking about it now, so I imagine the answers will get more dramatic. There is so much negative in the news and just in general I thought this was a great idea to get some positive energy going.....and yes, they made me do it too.

1. The cat made me laugh
2. great weather
3. got to watch baseball
4. everyone is healthy today
5. it is raining on my new bushes

I guess my life is pretty simple too when it comes down to it...I guess that should be number 6.

Cinco de Mayo on Flagler

The third annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be held on Flagler Avenue this Wednesday, May 5th. The celebration kicks off at 5pm and runs through 9pm with 10 venues featuring live Latin entertainment, dancing, iced cold cervezas and of course Mexican food. The event is free to the public.

Each year, communities throughout the United States and Mexico celebrate Cinco de Mayo in commemoration of the 1862 Battle of Puebla.  Contrary to popular belief Cinco De Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day which is September 16th. It is, however, a Mexican national holiday called 'Battle of Puebla Day' or Cinco De Mayo.
