The Man Report

Last month I shared my excitement at receiving COSMO magazine once again after many years. If you missed it, here it is.

So, I have received my next issue and we will now have a new monthly feature.....THE MAN REPORT.

Cosmo actually has a section called the MAN MANUAL! This Man Manual features "the man report". This month you can "CHART HIS MOOD": when he visits your family. Yes, if you are too stupid to figure it out, COSMO can help you...they have an actual chart that will tell you what he is thinking while visiting your "RENTS". I think that is Cosmo slang for parents.....

I bet you did not know that you can learn alot of information by how your man "SITS"...yes like in a chair, or on the couch, or on a bar stool. You no longer have to try and analyze why he is "Sittting" the way he is, this quick and handy COSMO guide will take all the mystery out of "the way he sits"..I am thinking if he is sitting and his credit card is out paying for dinner it is all good! If you go back and read last month, having hair on his head is also a plus.

Did you know that 81% of men think that a "HOOKUP" can turn into a relationship....Come on....is this crap for real!!!!!

There is also a section on "what makes a great girlfriend". Does anyone over the age of 16 really care what makes a great girlfriend?

If you are confused about what is the "ultimate dealbreaker" for a man, you can find it here...since I don't want you to suffer like I did...here it is...."don't gossip, never be right, don't be materialistic and you better like their mother".......there is also lots of advice on how to pick the best time to IMPRESS HIM... as well as how to put him in a sexy mood.

SO.....I will gossip with my friends, I am usually right, I am totally materialistic and like it.....and I usually like their mother as long as she is another state.....I could go on but you get it...once again another totally useless issue of COSMO magazine that makes women look like idiots...it actually makes men look kind of stupid too.......

OM Bar~Two Big Years

The OM Bar & Chill Lounge on Flager will celebrate their second anniversary on Saturday. They have a great selection of wines, cigars and unusual beers & microbrews. This year they also added a full liquor bar. Should be a good time!

Weekend

This rain is on its way out and the cold is moving in. At least it is not snow. We are so spoiled here.
Couple of weekend reminders - the NSB CAPS Annual Spaghetti dinner is tommorrow at NSB High School from 12-6pm. Not only will they have spaghetti for 5.00 a plate but entertainment as well. The Coronado Beach Elementary Chorus will perform at 1:30pm. (That was a shameless plug for my daughter's chorus.)

Images Art Festival is tomorrow at Riverside Park and continues thru Sunday.

Chases by the Beach is no longer Chase's, it was purchased and ownership turned over this past week. Have not seen any changes but they are coming I hear.

Clancy's Cantina is getting ready to move from the Publix Plaza over to Flagler Ave. This will be great for the eveing and later hours businesses along Flagler.

Also on the dinner front....word is the old Shell's restaurant is going to be turned into some sort of wing restaurant. Not a Hooters but similar. Not sure how true that is but a local realtor told me that one. So we shall see.

Stay tuned and enjoy the weekend!

Weekend Events

It can't really be Wednesday already? Things are starting to pick up around town. This weekend is the Images, Festival of the Arts in Riverside Park. This is the 33rd year for the festival, featuring local artists, food and entertainment.
Saturday at 11:30 is the Grand Opening of the Dolphin View Restaurant, the old Sea Harvest. I had lunch there a couple weeks ago. Cannot recommend it yet but I will go back and give it another shot. I am sure they needed some time to get the bugs out.
Here is one I need to investigate further - Oak Hill Seafood Co-Op. This is being held this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10-5. Local fresh seafood as avalable. It is located at 700 N US highway 1 in Oak Hill(Cook's Plaza). There is a contact number 386-345-0023 and Jimmy is the contact person. If anyone has any further info on that one please email me or leave a comment.
Speaking of Seafood, The Islander Beach Cafe now has Oyster Hour, Monday thru Friday from 5pm-6pm. Oysters are 39 cents a piece. They also have shrimp, clams and crab. Gotta check that one out, I can eat some oysters.
Have a great rest of the week!

Good Stuff

I got some hate mail today about my Jon Stewart piece. OH WELL!

But in case you did not see this on the TODAY show or the Nightly News, I think you should have a look.

The Daily Show

I love Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. I cannot stand Fox News and not because I am a crazy Democrat. I cannot stand Fox News because they are ridiculous and almost unamerican(I think that is a word.)

Regardless of your political persuasion the facts are our country is in big trouble, and although I do not agree with those that think President Obama is the second coming, I do HOPE that he can get us on the road to being out of this mess. He is the President, he was elected by the people, for the people and the people should support him and hope he is successful.

Now as I jump off my soapbox, check out this clip from The Daily Show. This is why I think Fox News is laughable.

This & That

The first Art Walk of 2009 is this Saturday from 10am-5pm on Flagler Ave. With luck it will warm up. It has not been this cold in New Smyrna Beach since 2003, at least that is what Channel 6 says.
It appears that most events and activities in the community start up again in February, so we will get a good list together for February and post it.
Here is an interesting local note:

Flip Flop’s Grill & Chill located just off Flagler has a soon to be famous Chef. Chef Danny will be on season 5 of FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen”. The first episode premieres next Thursday night, January 29th at 9pm. You can read about the show and Danny’s profile here.

Local Business:

Did you know New Smyrna Beach has a local office supply store. Cibu Office Supply located at 406 Canal Street. They have a full line of office supplies and very competitive prices. Support your local businesses!

Gimme Some Reruns

I like everyone else in America (well except two people I know, and you know who you are...) watched President Obama being sworn in, watched him eat lunch, watched them take Ted Kennedy away in an ambulance, watched him walk up Pennsylvania Avenue blah, blah, blah.....

I have high hopes he and his administration will facilitate change and return this country to prosperity. But for heavens sake as we enter the 45th hour of continuous coverage can I please just have a Law & Order rerun or maybe some CSI or even some local news. How many times can Brian Williams and Katie Couric say the same thing??

The sad part is in a few days the love fest will end and the press will start skewering President Obama just like they do every other President and make his already difficult job impossible. I hope I am wrong and the good will and happiness continues, but as he is forced to make difficult decisions he won't be so popular.

Good luck and God Bless Mr. President, you are going to need it!

Now off to watch Food Network, maybe HGTV or Sci Fi.........

Bad Dog

There are no bad dogs....this is something my father has always said. Only dogs that are not trained by stupid owners. I am lucky enough to have the dog whisperer for a brother so my dogs are trained, they are not smart but they are trained.

I took my daughter to see Marley & Me this long weekend and she loved it, I loved it and we both cried. Her first "real dog" was a rescued Greyhound named Stoney that adopted her more than we adopted him. Two years ago we had to make the decision to end his life peacefully, so she really related to this movie.

Here are some links to great local rescue organizations where you can get your next Marley or Stoney.....

Coastal Boxer Rescue - we have a rescued Boxer right now, he is not smart but he is a great pet.

Greyhound Pets of America/Daytona - I cannot say enough about what great pets they are, we got ours from the TN Greyhound Rescue.

Southeast Volusia Humane Society - get a dog at the shelter, they will love you for it.

Almost every breed of dog has a rescue foundation in every state. Check it out and do your research before you invest your money, time and heart into a new pet.

Turn Off That Phone

My daughter informed me this morning she and one other girl are the only ones in her class that do not have cell phones.

I said to myself, "Self, she is 9 and in fourth grade, I know where she is and who she is with at all times, why in the world would she need a cell phone?"
Oh what, she might miss an important call while she is playing with her Barbies or on Webkinz, no, but because all the other kids have them. Well, this nine year old will be going a little longer without being "like all the other kids." And now to sum up her reaction....."Mom, you are ruining my life!" I wonder if she will suffer permanent damage?

Cosmo

So I am sitting around on Saturday night watching Shark Swarm on Hallmark Channel. I am sure my friends over at the Chum Slick are disturbed by this movie. It just goes to show what an exciting life I have.

Anyway I took a gander at a free magazine I got today courtesy of Ann Crabs and her freebies. It happens to be Cosmopolitan, I am sure at some point we have all read this magazine at least once. I have not read it since college so more than 20 years. Talk about ridiculous, shallow and who cares stupid stuff. There is a section called the "Man Manual", really I am not kidding. Some of this months features in the Man Manual are:

"What His Hair Says About Him" - I am usually happy if I meet a man that has hair. It does not need to say anything about him, it just needs to be on his head.

"What His Shower Style Reveals" - you are kidding me right? His shower style?? Just so he takes a shower, who the heck cares???

But this is my favorite-"Surprising things that turn him off" - these include - wearing overly revealing clothing and being kinky in bed. YEA RIGHT.

Now if and only if you get past the MAN MANUAL, the next section is "5 Traits a GUY SHOULD HAVE BEFORE YOU GET SERIOUS" these are the best, all you women out there who have been married more than 5 minutes or are divorced from idiots will love this.

1. He knows what he wants. - For dinner maybe.....
2. He has a sunny outlook. - Uh huh sure.
3. He is open to changing for you. - I am rolling on the floor.
4. He's still a little mysterious. - There are too many comments I could make here.
5. He's responsible with money. - If he has a job be happy.

Then we have the next article, "Are you crazy enough in bed?" OK what happened to those surprising things that turn him off( you know overly kinky). Where do these people come from??

I could go on and give you some more idiotic examples from this magazine, but you get the idea.

New Smyrna Beach School Meeting

The meeting was held last night at the high school, lots of people attended and expressed their dismay and concern over the cuts. Here is the coverage from the News Journal. The general consensus is inundate your elected officials with calls, letter etc. Here is the info on our local representatives. There is also a couple of interesting opinion letters in the Journal this morning on this subject. Check it all out and write, write, write.
Once you do that head on over to the Spirits of 44 liquor store on State Road 44, in the K-Mart plaza. You may have seen the ladies out by the road waving customers in for their going out of business sale. They will be closing soon and everything must go.

Who Needs Diet & Exercise?

This is an ad from the 30's. All this time I thought I had to eat less and exercise more and all I really needed was a tapeworm...who knew? I am thinking that as a side business I should start marketing this. There is money to be made in tapeworms!

Do I See 30's

Are my eyes deceiving me? A high on Friday of 56 degrees, a low of 36??? Of course this is in Orlando so it will be a tad balmier here at the beach but come on...it is getting cold. My son might have to break out the pants to wear to school. For more fun weather information check out Channel 6's new Just Weather. If you stick in your zip code at the top you get all sorts of interesting weather stuff about your town. Just for fun, I put in my hometown, the current temperature there is 18 degrees!! Guess I better quit whining!

Every Sentence Starts With Mom.....

Mom, Hey Mom, Mommy, Mom, Mooooommmmm. If you are a mother you know what I mean. My children start every sentence with Mom. Most everything that comes out of my son's mouth goes something like, "Mom, where is...my back pack, my book, my ipod, my shoes, my skateboard, my head." My daughter is a question box..."Mom, what is...,why is...,where is....what is.....how come......????" You get the idea. Some days it is enough to drive you over the edge of sanity.

Today was one of those days...then I checked on another blog that I follow, some of you are familiar with the story of Audrey Caroline and some of you are not. If you are not it is well worth the read. Yesterday was a big anniversary for this family and after reading and watching her video it made me glad that every sentence starts with Mom....see if you agree.

Raccoon Update

I got several emails inquiring as to the fate of my 'coons. After spending 3 long days and night with Fred (the coon hunter) we have successfully been saved from anymore sleepless nights. Our eaves and roof has been secured with steel bars (again by Fred), the attic fumigated and cleaned and the Mama Coon and her two babies have moved on. Should you need coon services or other home improvement I would recommend Fred he did a great job. If you need his number drop me an email.

Enjoy the weekend!

School Budget Cuts

If you have not seen the depth of the cuts that Volusia County Schools are facing then you need to take a look at this article from the News Journal this morning. It outlines what is being cut immediately, as well as proposed for next year. Sports will be gone. Electives will be gone. Most all programs will be gone.

Take a look at the potential additional revenue sources. Help me understand why they are not looking at the cigarette tax which would raise 1 billion dollars.

We are being led by a bunch of idiots in Tallahassee.

Here is the info on who to write to.

Inaugural Seaside Balloon Fest

The very first Seaside Balloon Fest is this weekend at the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport on US 1. It will be held Friday night from 5-8:30pm and Saturday starting at about 7am. Events include:

Friday: "Balloon Glow" -- illumination of balloon envelopes by their burners accompanied by music. Plus tethered balloon rides, food and other activities. On Saturday there will be a simultaneous dawn liftoff of at least 20 hot-air balloons. You can make a reservation and take a ride for a cost of $175 per person. Call 407-897-5432 for reservations.

Here is an article on the event from the News Journal.

Volusia County Schools Financial Crisis

It is no big secret that our school system is out of money and about to lose more. Volusia County Schools is on this list of schools that is losing more funding, over 13 million. That is outrageous, totally outrageous.

Our brilliant leaders in Tallahassee have once again failed our children. The school board is holding a series of meetings around the county to give you the bad news and ask you to bombard your representatives for help. Here is the information on the meetings. The New Smyrna Beach meeting will be held on Thursday, January 15th at 6:30pm in the NSB High School.

If you are interested in who you need to be contacting here you go:

Florida House of Representatives:

District 28 which covers New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater is Dorothy Hukill

District 27 which covers Daytona, Ormond and Holly Hill, South Daytona and Daytona Beach Shores is Dwayne Taylor

District 26 which is Deland, Deltona and Lake Helen is Pat Patterson

And the Senate, we are primarily District 7 which is Evelyn Lynn

Let's not leave out our brilliant Governor Charlie Crist, by all means include him on any and all emails you send.

If you click on their name you can not only get information about them but in the right hand corner is a handy little email your rep button, one click and you can tell them what you think.

In order to make finding your rep easy, I will include a link to this post in the left sidebar for future reference. If you are unable to attend the meeting check back here next week and I will post the important points so you can contact your representative even if you are not at a meeting.

Whether or not you have children in the school system currently does not matter. These decisions and budget cuts effect every single person in our community. Our future leaders are not getting the education that it is our responsibility to provide and it is not acceptable.

Please do not think that someone else will take care of it, someone else will send that email, someone else will write that letter. Everyone needs to act!

Big Gym Day

UPDATE - January 7, 2009 - Curves in New Smyrna has closed next to the Outback, I hear there is a new one opening soon in the K-Mart Plaza on 44. Sorry for the misinformation!

The Monday after New Year's is the single biggest day in gym and health club attendance of the entire year. Sadly, for most it does not last. Below are some local resources for facilities in our area.

Nautilus By The Sea - located on Saxon Ave in the Publix Plaza Beachside, this is the gym I go to. It is the cleanest place I have ever been. Nautilus equipment kept in the very best condition. Very inexpensive, less than a dollar a day for an individual membership. They have been in business since 1991 and offer Yoga, personal traning, aerobics etc.

New Smyrna Athletic Club is located at 401 Canal Street. - They offer yodga, aerobics, tanning etc. I do not have much information on them but they are conveniently located and have been around for several years.

Curves - has two locations in New Smyrna and Edgewater.

Beachfit - I stumbled across this one this morning, their site is under construction but the pictures look good.

I also hear there is a new club opening in Edgewater in early January but I don't have any details yet.

Get moving and have a great Monday!

Coonhunter

I have coons under my roof, this is not to be confused with having bats in your belfry. I have this Coon that is bigger than my dog living in my ceiling. He romps around in there at all hours of the day and night. I have gotten rid of it once and it came back. Now I think the whole family is living up there. So my brother came over last night to try and scare it out of there. Some of you know him as Mountain Man. He shoots guns, arrows, all sorts of hunting stuff...so last night he went Coon hunting in my yard. Well PETA can sleep well tonight, the coon and all his friends are still up there having a party. Tomorrow I will call in the professional varmint trappers, then maybe we can sleep around here.

While the coon hunting was going on the people behind us were having a party, this was the third or maybe fourth night that they had a big fire going, loud music...all that. Well about 10pm, the entire New Smyrna Beach police deparment arrived, 3 cruisers, 2 SUV's, a veritable bevy of uniformed officers descended on the unsuspecting suspects. Of course we were peering through holes in our fence and witnessed them getting busted for underage drinking, some drugs and whatnot. It appears the parents of one of these future leaders live in Orlando and they were letting them use the house. Several other parents arrived to retrieve their wayward teens and a few older ones were taken away in handcuffs. I used this handy opportunity to give some real life scared straight to my preteen children.

All in all it was a busy weekend at the beach!

Enjoy the week!

Two More Days

Two more days left of winter break. Not a moment too soon at my house. I love sleeping in on break but I sure love getting up early to get them back to school! I have a list of errands and things to do on Monday morning that have waited and waited to get done til school has started again! We need to get back into a routine at my house, how about you?

Just a reminder the Community Info Flyers are in our left hand menu, some of these flyers make it home with the kids and some do not. Southeast Volusia Little League sign-ups are next week Jan 9-11. This flyer is on the website, you can also get information at SEVLL.

The Little League program is pretty good, they have some good coaches and it is great fun for the kids.

Sea Harvest Reopens

Back in the early 90's my parents moved to Edgewater, my younger brother and I both lived in Orlando and we loved nothing better than to come over and hit Sea Harvest for a fried grouper sandwich. When I moved back to Florida (here to New Smyrna) in 2007 I was sad to hear they had closed down. My arteries were thankful as I am sure the wonderful sandwich was a heart attack waiting to happen. Arteries aside, I was thrilled to hear they reopened this past week. They are now called the Dolphin View Seafood Restaurant and are located at 107 Riverside Drive in the old blue building that housed Sea Harvest. Their website is under construction, but here is an article about it from the Observer.

I am looking forward to that Grouper Sandwich!

Just a note, I love this picture of the old Sea Harvest, I found it Wayne Timm's website. He some great pictures of some of our local landmarks. If you don't look too close you don't see the word sample written across it...smile.

I decided to make some resolutions this year, I usually don't but I keep hearing how important it is to document your goals. So I am documenting them for all to witness.
  1. Most important, I want to work less and enjoy life more. I spend way too much time with my face in a computer, I need a life or a new job!
  2. I will get organized. (my mother is laughing right now...and she is laughing hard) Most days I cannot see the top of my desk. RIDICULOUS.
  3. I will establish some sort of schedule, I sort of have one but it is very loose. I will follow my daily plan and get back to making lists.
  4. I will continue to exercise and lose weight, my doctor told me this week if I lose 10 more pounds he feels certain I will no longer need medication for my blood pressure.
  5. Achieve financial independence. No explanation needed there!
