Southeast Volusia YMCA

The Southeast Volusia YMCA has started sign-ups for youth basketball. They are located at 148 West Turgot in Edgewater, right in front of Hawks Park, the Little League Baseball Park.

Also here is a free 7-day pass to use the facilities at the Y. This is a great way for the whole family to try out the facility before joining.

Upcoming Local Youth Sports.

Going forward the local youth sports organizations will not be allowed to send home fliers with the children of Volusia County Schools, I was speaking to Doris Mills over at the Police Athletic League yesterday and she told me the school will be implementing a web page that will feature all the local fliers. The reason I was speaking to Doris was because I missed the deadline for the PAL basketball league (never saw a flier). She graciously put him on a waitlist.

So.....here are a few upcoming deadlines for sports that are coming up:

The NSB Parks & Rec Basketball Training League for 5,6 & 7 year olds deadline is December 12th. Here is the information and registration form.

Parks & Rec also offers Flag Football, my son played this last year and had a blast. Registration Deadline for that one is Wed, November 26th. Here is the information and registration form.

Correction: The Edgewater YMCA also has basketball programs, their registration is until November 26th. Go to the YMCA on Turgot Ave in Edgewater to register, it is $45.00 for non YMCA members and $15.00 for Members. Their phone number is 386-409-9622.

Once that sports page is added to the schools site we will link to it for you.

Weekend Events

I could not find anything very exciting going on this weekend at the Beach, the Chill Bar has a band tonight and tomorrow, Flagler Tavern has the usual stuff going on. It is supposed to be a bit cooler so the beach is your best bet.

New Smyrna Parks and Rec has extended fall baseball and softball signups til August 20th. You can get the forms and information here.

The Seafood Festival is August 14th on Flagler, more on that next week.

Enjoy the weekend!

Weekend Stuff

So what is happening in New Smyrna Beach this weekend? Not much.....the surf is rough, lots of rip currents, thunderstorms and a few jellyfish here and there. There is a band at the OM Bar on Flagler tonight that is supposed to be pretty good. Not much else that I could dig up to do for fun.

NSB Parks and Rec is signing up for Fall Baseball and Soccer, Police Athletic League is also holding signups for Fall Football for ages 13-15. Click the links above for the specific information.

Have a great weekend!

Baseball

My son plays Little League, he LOVES Baseball, he is very proud of himself for making the All Star Team in his age group. His team is going to play in a tournament.....if it ever stops raining every day. Since it is Florida in the summer I am guessing it won't stop...so this could go on all summer!
But, he got himself some new baseball cards today at the bookstore, they had a contest in them to win a Yankees trip. He entered to win....then told me, Mom, I don't really want to go on that trip. I asked him why he entered....he said, "I want to win it and give to Grandpa and Uncle Rick. They would LOVE a Yankee trip." He is one good kid....thanks Little League.

Police Athletic League

Boy Child has been playing PAL Basketball this winter and has had a great time. There have been challenges, out of control parents, silly coaches who jump up and down and scream and refs that don't have a clue. All that aside it has been a very favorable experience. I am glad my son got to see some of the colorful things that have happened this season, on and off the court. It has truly been a learning experience for him and for me. Check out the New Smyrna Beach PAL here, they have track and field and karate coming up in the spring if you are interested.

NSB Parks & Rec

In my old life in NC I was part of a large youth sports organization, it is a ton of work for a small number of volunteers and is governed by County Parks & Rec.

When we moved here my son wanted to sign up for soccer with New Smyrna Beach Parks & Rec and I did not have high hopes, I have never loved soccer, he has always played football, but I figured it would be a great way for him to make some friends in a new area.

What a great experience it has been so far, our team did not have a coach the first week of practice, and one of the parents stepped up not only to coach but to sponsor the team. Angel Garcia of Divine Homes Realty of New Smyrna Beach has been terrific with the kids.

These kids are 9 and 10 years old, they are exhibiting excellent sportsmanship, playing and a team and having a great time! Thanks to Angel and Parks & Rec for their great program!

Breaker's Night

My kids love Wednesday, it is Breakers Night, as they call it. The Breakers Restaurant on Flagler has .35 chicken wings. My kids love them, I can order 15, they split it and a basket of fries, I get something reasonable and we eat for $20.00. I cannot eat at McDonalds with them for $20.00, and the view is certainly better.

Update on the surfing lesson, since today was early early release day we were supposed to hook up with "Luke" our new surf teacher, I called him a couple times, left a few messages and have not heard back. So.....will let you know how that turns out!!
