Angel Food Ministries

With a heart to help others and a generous spirit, Joe and Linda Wingo founded Angel Food Ministries in 1994 to provide food for friends and neighbors who were struggling financially. Today, they are still doing the same thing. The Angel Food program now is helping provide food relief to more than 500,000 families each month.
There are 14 distribution sites within a 30 mile radius of New Smyrna Beach. The closest being Edgewater, Port Orange and Deland. Click here for all 14 locations.
Angel Food is not a Food Bank, they purchase high quality food at discount prices and sell it less expensively than grocery stores. In general you can get around $65.00 worth of food for $30.00. Each month therre is a different variety of food as well as specialty boxes. You can read more about how it works here.
This service was designed for people who may be having a hard time, laid off or temporarily in a tough economic situation. I know there are plenty of people like that in our area. Please check out their website and take advantage of the generosity of others.

Manic Monday

Do you Freecycle? If you don't you should look into it. Easy and Free way to get rid of your "stuff", the idea is not to get a bunch of free stuff but to keep things out of the landfills by sharing with others. We have a great group here in New Smyrna Beach. I think we have over 1,000 members in the area. There are over 6.5 million members worldwide. Check it out.

Took my daughter and our dogs to Smyrna Dunes Park today. It was a beautiful day and the park is very nice. If you have a dog that likes to play in the water it is especially nice.

Had my annual mammogram today at Port Orange Imaging Center on Dunlawton. This is my second year going there and it is a very pleasant experience. You don't wait, they are all very nice and it is pretty painless. Well, as painless as having a Ford F250 driven over your boob is.(just kidding, really, I am kidding)

Not sure if I have mentioned this but I love my son's teachers at Warner Christian Academy. He was dreading middle school and he loves Warner. Speaking of schools, I heard a rumor that Coronado Elementary was going to be closed. The announcement was supposed to be made after FCAT, never heard it so I guess it is just a rumor. Not a good one either I might add. I heard it from a teacher at another school, so we shall see.

In closing, a very good friend of mines husband died after a long illness this past week. They have two son's who are heartbroken. Please consider donating your organs upon your death. Did you know that each day an average of 63 people receive donated organs and another 16 people die on the waiting list?

You can find out more about Organ Donation in Florida here. You can find out about National Organ Donation here.

Let's Talk About Respect

I wandered into 7-11 at 27th Ave on South Beach tonight to get batteries for my son's X-BOX controllers...I have 3 boys staying overnight.....gotta have X-Box.....but I digress. It was kind of busy in there. The son of one of my friends works in there, he goes to college, he is a good kid.

I stood back tonight and observed while customer after customer were just plain RUDE to both him and the other man working. What is up with that? Why would you go into any public establishment and abuse the people working there? Would you do that in YOUR hometown? If your mother, sister, wife, brother or friend was working at 7-11 would you be happy if someone was mean or disrespectful to them?

One man at the counter asked the clerk who was counting his change what was taking so long "do you need an abacus?" ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

I don't care who you are or what kind of hurry you are in, there is no excuse for being nasty, rude and mean to someone who is waiting on you. Turns out I left my ATM card in the store, the clerk I mentioned before, the one who needs an abacus....brought it to my house on his way home. How's that for service?

Check back later for the Sunday Stumble!!!

Good Economic News (for a change)

I found this very interesting this morning. Makes you almost want to go buy a Ford. The news is all too depressing so this was a nice change.

Bagel World

I made my second visit to Bagel World this weekend. Probably the best bagels I have ever had, my daughter is the bagel queen and she just loves them. They have a large selection of breakfast sandwiches including egg, bacon, sausage, cheese pretty much whatever you can imagine on a bagel. They also have a large lunch sandwich menu and fresh squeezed OJ. Service was really good the first time I went and kind of on the gruff side the second time. But it is counter service and great food so who cares. Bagel World is located on the corner of Golden Court and A1A, sort of across from Boston Seafood. They are open from 7am-2pm and take CASH ONLY. I drive by every morning on the way to take my son to the bus and it is packed at 7am with service vehicles, construction trucks and utility workers, that is always a great sign that the food is excellent.

Fox 35 Friday Salute-Hometown Heroes

Friday Salute

Our own New Smyrna Beach Police and Fire/Rescue Department has been nominated for Fox 35 Orlando's Friday Salute. Each Friday the morning news on Fox salutes a local Police and Fire Department that is voted on by the viewers. You can check out videos on past winners here.

You can vote here or by clicking on the button at the top of the post. Our local heroes are up against Titusville and Lake Mary, we are currently winning. You need to register to vote and it takes about 30 seconds to register with their site. You can uncheck the box so you don't get email from FOX 35 and vote for our men and women in law enforcement and fire/rescue. If they win Fox Morning news will come to our fair city and do a piece on them next Friday.

Check back here next week and I will let you know how we are doing!

Goodrich Seafood

Have you ever been to Goodrich Seafood in Oak Hill? If you haven't it is worth the trip. This little hole in the wall sits next to a bait shop and fishing guide service and has some incredible food. It is owned my Larry Csonka, yes the football player. They open for breakfast and have a pretty big menu, serving fresh seafood, hanburgers, sandwiches and snacks. They do not serve alcohol but you can bring your own. Thursday is meatloaf day, and it was clear that the server knew my Dad, I am guessing that is his food of choice. I had a shrimp basket, it was served lightly fried and FRESH as could be, too much to eat. My Mom ordered a fish sandwich, it was huge and she did not even order a side, obviously knowing the sandwich was HUGE. It was excellent. They have outside seating right on the river and the service was fast and friendly.

Interesting way to store napkins, sweet n low and other condiments, in a tackle box on the table, keeps it clean and bug free.

Goodrich's is locates at 253 River Rd in Oak Hill, it is worth the short drive from the beach for some great seafood and excellent service. If you go on the weekend you can hit the Oak Hill Flea Market and find some treasures......
Enjoy the weekend!

Where Do You Go When You Are Sick....

.....and it isn't Monday - Friday from 8am-5pm?

We are very lucky to have Twilight Pediatrics for after hours if our kids are sick, I have used them and they are great. If you are an adult however there are not many choices, actually there are NO choices in Edgewater or New Smyrna Beach other than Bert Fish Emergency. I found that out on Saturday when I could wait no longer to see a doctor. If you Google Urgent Care you get Bert Fish or Bayview Urgent Care in Venetian Bay, I am guessing Bayview is not open yet since I could not find it....anywhere. Venetian Bay also advertises a Farmer's Market, did not see that anywhere either....but I digress....back to the medical issues at hand....So once I realized there is no urgent care in Venetian Bay and I have a $150.00 co-pay for Bert Fish Emergency I decided to head on up to Port Orange.

Port Orange Urgent Care is located at 1690 Dunlawton Ave, they are in Suite 120. There was a very short wait to see the doctor, he was friendly and quick, which is what I was looking for in my miserable sinus infected state. Judging from the small number of people in this Urgent Care I would guess our small community cannot support one as we just don't have enough sick people. I guess that is a good thing, although it was not so good for me on Saturday!‎

If you are sick and cannot wait, take the 10 minute drive to Port Orange Urgent Care and skip the Emergency Room.

St Patrick's Day Party on Flagler

The Merchants of Flagler will sponsor the 2nd annual St. Patrick's Day Party on Flagler this Tuesday, March 17th. The Om Bar will have free Corned Beef and Cabbage all day long, and there will be music, music, music at 10 different Flagler Ave Venues. A treasure hunt and traditional Irish food and drink will be featured. Should be fun for all so come on down to Flagler!

Good News

It seems all we hear is bad news in this world we are living in today. NBC Nightly News has been focusing on good news the past week or so. They have been highlighting positive things and random acts of kindness, all nominated by viewers. Check it out here, it is very positive and uplifting to watch.

In these days of corporate greed it was nice to read this article about the CEO of Beth Israel Hospital in New England.

Here are some sites that feature only Good News all the time:

LandShark Spring Surfari Pro Tournament

The Surfari Pro Contest Committee announced last week that the LandShark Spring Surfari Pro will take place April 1-5 at the our famous New Smyrna Inlet surf break, on the south side of Florida’s Ponce De Leon Inlet.

This tournament will mark the first professional surfing tournament in the area since 1989 when the Aloe-Up Cup took place. More information can be found here.

The local and national news has of course focused on our "shark bite capitol of the world" status each and every time they report on this tournament. Hopefully our sharky friends will stay quiet during the 4 day tournament. This will bring about 2,000 visitors to the inlet. The area needs the business and welcomes this tournament!

FCAT Week

Well, it is that time again in Florida, FCAT time, my daughter is already planning her breakfasts for the week and stressing out about this ridiculous test. Luckily she is an excellent tester and I refuse to entertain her insecurities about this test. Here is the official FCAT site if you are interested in reading the drivel and propaganda surrounding this test. Here is the FCAT Explorer which is designed to provide resources for parents and students to achieve better results on this test. The schools hold workshops for the parents, send home packets of information and put so much emphasis on this test. So why in the world do they schedule it the week of Daylight Savings Time?

Churches

There are many fine local churches in our area for newcomers and visitors to attend. There are a couple of good lists that I found to direct you. The first is here on Topix. It lists 56 local churches from Port Orange to Edgewater to Samsula. Google probably has the best listing I found here. You can access websites and directions directly from this page.

Since we have lived here we have attended several churches. Beachside we visited Coronado United Methodist. We also visited Crossroads Christian Church. Their holiday events were excellent and we enjoyed the regular service very much. We regularly attend Edgewater Alliance Church in Edgewater. Both of these wonderful churches provide their sermons online so you can have a listen before you go if you so desire.

The beach is lovely this weekend, low surf, water is cold but no sign of any jellyfish.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Friday Follies~This & That

Due to illness of just about everyone in the house this will be a fairly lame Friday Follies. With that disclaimer out of the way here is what I have.

Interesting and Informative Blog on local real estate conditions-New Smyrna Real Estate.

Halifax Urban Ministries has opened a new office in New Smyrna Beach. They relocated from the First United Methodist Church to a larger site at 715 Canal St. This office, which is the agency's fifth in Volusia County, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and serves 800 to 1,000 people a month with food and financial assistance.

The Atlantis Bistro on Flagler Ave will be reviewed quite favorably in the Orlando Sentinel this weekend. You can read it now here. My brother and I have had lunch there several times and it has always been excellent with great service.

Finally, I received a quite nasty email from a local reader who feels I should not talk about our school system. I am not sure why he/she is not outraged by the budget cuts and nonsense that is going on but apparently he/she is not. It states:

"you should shut up about Volusia County Schools, we do not want higher taxes and we don't care about program cuts" (I am guessing they have no children and don't care about the future of our state or country) They go on to say "Your kid does not even attend Volusia County so why do you care?"

Let me tell you why I care, first let me correct you, my daughter attends Coronado Elementary School. My son also went to Coronado, I made the personal decision to send my son to Warner Christian Academy for 6th grade. Mainly because of the quality of education, class size and budget cuts. This was before the additional millions was taken from our children and teachers this year. They are looking at losing music, art, sports, academic programs and in some schools are being forced to sit in a gymnasium when teachers call in sick with no academic instruction. The public education system is in a shambles and no one in our government seems willing to be accountable for the disaster and take steps to fix it. This is why I care. My parents pay for my son to attend private school or he would not be able to attend. This is why I care. His educational experience this year has been excellent and he loves school, even though he gets up 90 minutes earlier than his friends to catch a bus to Daytona at 7am and does not have early release every Wednesday, no teacher work days off of school and it is a fairly strict atmosphere. No complaints from him. Because of all those extra educational hours they have built in they did not have to make up the Tropical Storm Fay days and had the whole week of Thanksgiving off. It is not perfect but it has been an overall positive experience.

So in conclusion to my anonymous reader. I will continue to harp on the school system when appropriate and share information as I come across it. I chose not to publish your entire email in the event that you might be embarrased by some of your grammar and spelling. There is a tool called spellcheck that will help you with that. My children know how to use it...they learned it in school. This is why I care.

This & That

Did you know the Chamber of Commerce offers computer classes, they have one on Friday, March 6th from 9am-11am on Computer Basics. It is 10.00 for Chamber Members and 20.00 for non-members. Also our Volusia County Public Library Offers all sorts of classes and events at the different branches.

I had the pleasure of utilizing Twilight Pediatrics at Bert Fish last night. There was literally no wait, the staff was extremely pleasant and it was a positive experience, as positive as you can have with a sick kid.

This Sunday March is the Bluegrass Bash For a Cure, it begins at 3PM at Beachside Tavern. It is a benefit for The Relay For Life and features The Pickin’ Kind and The Pot Likkers, special guest star Ben Prestage, on stage at 7:30pm. Donations accepted at the door. Hosted by the Cancer Bustin’ Bankers.

Java Jungle in Port Orange has a great friday night alternative to the bar scene. It's a great place to meet and get the evening started or to wind down after dinner, the theater or a movie. Enjoy a signature coffee beverage and enjoy dessert on us. That's right, free dessert for everyone. It is from 5pm-10pm.

They are located at:

4606 Clyde Morris Blvd.
Ravenwood Square
Port Orange, FL

More events to come, we have had a rough week, sick kids, dogs killing squirrels and much more fun!

Pets At The Beach

For all you dog lovers there is a place in New Smyrna you can take your pet.

Smyrna Dunes Park is 73 acres located on the northern tip of the New Smyrna Beach peninsula where you and your dog can enjoy the beach. There is 2 miles of boardwalk with views of the Indian River, Ponce Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. A great view of the lighthouse while walking. Meet other dog lovers and see a wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles, marine life and vegetation in their natural habitat. You must keep your pet on a leash at all times, I have seen dogs loose early in the morning before there is too many people. It is 3.50 per car but you can walk over for free.

Thre is also a dog park at 2641 Paige Avenue. This park features concrete play areas separated for large and small dogs and shelter and a dog water fountain. Directions.

Several condos including Bouchelle Island, Eastwind Villas and Oceanwalk accept pets, Coquina, Longboard and Night Swan Bed & Breakfast accept pets and several rental homes do as well. Contact me for more information and I will put you in touch with them.

If you lose your pet while you are here we have two local animal shelters:

Monday Mayhem

It is a bit chilly here at the beach today. But according to Just Weather and my new Twitter friend Daytonamarc it will be warming thru the week. Monday did not start out great, my daughter did not want to get up, "it is too cold Mom", yea yea yea, she does not want to get up when it is 80 so cold is relative. I would love to see her if she lived in say, New Jersey or Wisconsin.....would not be pretty. My son is sick, has been all weekend, it is like living with a harp seal in the house, he is coughing so bad.

We will have the weekend events later in the week when I figure out what they are, one note. One of our readers, Jill (thanks Jill) has let me know there is a Farmers Market in Edgewater, it is called Laurino's Fresh Produce and is located in the old Curves in Edgewater. This is 2102 S. Ridgewood Ave. I will try and find out there hours and let you know, they have a farm in Samsula so it is all locally grown!

There is now one Curves in the immediate area and it is in the K-Mart Plaza on 44.

I had one addition to the Money Saving Links from yesterday. Cents to get Debt Free. She has great tips, I read the Walgreens 101 section and learned alot.

The bikers rolled into town on Friday, made my very first visit to Pub 44 on Friday night, it was a pretty tame experience. I found all the bikers we talked to to be friendly, respectful and very nice. For the most part they said they preferred our town to Daytona because it is "low-key" compared to Daytona. Good for New Smyrna Beach I would say.

Have a great week and keep those links and local information coming. Remember to support your local business!
