Musicians On Call

This month the 12for12k Challenge is supporting Musicians on Call.

Musicians On Call, a nonprofit organization formed in 1999, brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities. Musicians On Call uses music to promote and complement the healing process for patients, families and caregivers.

Musicians On Call was originally founded by Michael Solomon and Vivek Tiwary in the course of their volunteer work with The Kristen Ann Carr Fund at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

After a concert sponsored by the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, a hospital staff member raised the issue that some of the patients had been unable to attend the performance either because they were in treatment or too sick to leave their rooms. In response, Michael, Vivek and the musician went from room to room to play for those patients who had been unable to attend the concert. The one-on-one interaction of patient and musician created a crucial intimacy; the expressions on the faces of friends and family members at the patients' bedsides revealed a deep sense of connection and release. Musicians On Call was born!

12 For 12K Supports UNICEF in June

Every day 25,000 children die from a preventable cause.

Having what it takes, doing whatever it takes—this is the essence of UNICEF, the organization that has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world.

UNICEF’s accomplishments are the result of more than 60 years of on-the ground work all around the world, led by experts from a range of disciplines, who have unparalleled influence at the highest levels of government, and the courage, resolve and commitment to get the job done.

More children are alive today because of UNICEF. And yet, impressive as these results are, it is not enough.

UNICEF’s unmatched reach, expertise, access and influence, innovation, efficiency and resolve mandate that we do whatever it takes to put an end to the unnecessary deaths of 25,000 children who die every day from preventable causes.

This is where the Believe in Zero campaign aims to make the difference.

That even one child dies from a preventable cause is completely unacceptable—especially when simple, basic and affordable interventions exist to save lives.

What will your donation buy? I will focus on Water. Water is life.

Yet one billion people do not have access to safe water, and 2.6 billion people live without proper sanitation. Water-borne illness is the second highest cause of childhood death in the world. When water is unsafe and sanitation non-existent, water can kill.

$10 can provide 400 children with enough clean drinking water for one day. Just $10, less than we spend on coffee in a week. Can you give $10 to save countless children?

12 For 12K May Challenge

The 12for12k charity project has one goal, that is to help as many charities as possible across the whole non-profit spectrum. In order to do this they continuously ask for charity suggestions from supporters.

The charity they are supporting in May is The Hospice of Peel and was suggested by 12for12k supporter Daniel Patricio and is incredibly inspiring in their dedication to helping individuals living with a terminal illness.

Located in Mississauga, Ontario, the Hospice of Peel aims to be recognized as the foremost provider of, and resource for, hospice care. When illnesses can no longer be treated medically, the volunteers and trained professionals of the Hospice of Peel are the emotional response for those affected.

The philosophy of the hospice is clear - to offer the compassionate care to those living with a terminal illness, to live as full, active and most importantly independent a life for as long as possible.

To be able to offer this kind of caring and support for the patient and the family, the Hospice of Peel relies on both its volunteers and donations from the community, locally and nationally. This is where 12for12k and our supporters can step forward. The philosophy behind the 12for12k campaign is to make a difference in the lives of millions through social media - imagine the difference we can make to those whose lives are often forgotten.

These are the types of services and help that donations to the hospice help to provide:

$20 provides care to a family for a week
$50 can help with special interactive “kits for kids” for children with terminal illness (Hospice of Peel helps all ages)
$100 can sponsor home visits by volunteers to offer support for Hospice of Peel patients
$130 provides transportation for day hospice patients for a whole month
$200 can provide bereavement care for one year
$520 provides professional 10-week training for volunteers
$1,000 provides much-needed craft supplies for the Day Hospice for six months

We hope you’ll join us in helping those whose lives need our support as much as anyone we have supported so far. Let’s make a difference.

April 12 for 12K Challenge

The 12for12k Challenge is the combination of social media and fund-raising that aims to change the lives of millions worldwide. By harnessing the power of social media and its unparalleled networking tools, 12for12k looks to bring hope and optimism to those who need it most.

The premise of 12for12K is simple:

12 months
12 charities
$12,000 per charity

By using the power and outreach of social media to spread the word, many less fortunate people will be helped.

To ensure as much help goes to those who need it, all the partners in the 12for12k Challenge are offering their time and services for free. Additionally, every charity chosen must have no more than 10% administration costs, with financial records available on request. Additionally, all donations go direct to the charity’s normal donation page - there is no middle-man to handle donations.

Wonderful things have happened in 2009. War Child, Stop the Silence were the first two charities to be aided by 12for12K. Then in March an amazing thing happened. 12for12K unleashed the power of Twitter and raised over $15,000 for Share Our Strength, which is committed to see that no child in the US is ever hungry.

This month, 12for12K is joining forces with Mom It Forward to support Yehu.org. Which is helping mothers and families in Rural Kenya. Read about them and the wonderful things they do and go to 12for12k if you would like to support them or any of the other charities supported by 12for12K.

What If It Were Your Kids?

The March Challenge at 12 for 12K is all about the kids. More than 12.4 million children in America are at risk from hunger. 12.4 million - that’s one in six children. Consequences include poorer health, fatigue, hospitalization, behavioral difficulties and impaired scholastic performance. Share Our Strength aims to change that.

Catch up on what 12 for 12K is all about here.

For just $12.00 you can be part of the solution to hungry kids in the United States. I am guessing the majority of my readers don't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, but I know people who do and in the last couple of years I have relied on family and friends to help me out more than once. So...let's all do our part and give just $12.00 for this great cause.

If you are use Twitter there is a 12 hour Tweetathon going on today to promote this cause.

Check out their Facebook Page and join the cause.

Enjoy the day!

The 12 for 12K Challenge

12for12k-banner-234x60-3-animated

The 12for12k Challenge is the brainchild of Press Release PR owner Danny Brown. Inspired by the way that social media has changed so many lives for the better already with various charity promotions, Danny wanted to do something that was both easy to take part in and have the potential to change as many lives as possible. The 12for12k Challenge started taking shape.

It is a very simple concept:

12 months of the year
12 charities, 1 chosen every month
1200 people
$10 donation per person, per charity, each month for 12 months, a total of just $120 per person over the year

They have some pretty strict requirements for the charities they choose to support.

Read about this months charity Stop The Silence here.
