Green Friday

I have been trying to be more ecologically friendly and save some money in the process. Simple things make a big difference, recyling cans, bottles and newspapers, turning off lights, hanging clothes on the line and not using the dryer unless absolutely necessary. I do all of those as well as limit my trips by combining my errands into one big trip. Check out these interesting sites for more information, newsletters and free "stuff"

School Lunch

I was reading yesterday's paper this morning (I know, don't ask) and I came across an article about Healthy School Lunches. The University of Minnesota did a study and found that kids will still buy and eat school lunches if they are healthy, and imagine their surprise to discover that it does NOT cost more to prepare healthy lunches for students.

The school district in St. Paul, MN is a model that other schools should follow according to the study. I would certainly appreciate it if our Volusia County School leaders would take a look at our lunch program and steal some ideas from them.

The culinary director for Volusia County Schools, Costas Magoulas was named one of the top 20 Chef's in Central Florida by the Restaurant Forum Magazine. I am thinking this was NOT when he was planning the school lunches. My kids hate the food at the school, I have surveyed other parents at soccer games, the library, the grocery store, all around town and I have yet to find anyone whose kid "likes" the lunches. Everyone thinks it is great they get free breakfast but the lunches are awful....nasty as my daughter puts it.

As parents we need to make some noise and be heard on this issue. Our kids go to school 180 days a year, that is 180 meals that they eat at school, 360 if they eat breakfast. Many parents pack their kids lunches just so they will eat, but for some parents these school meals are the only ones they may get all day, the reduced and free lunch program is widely used in our county.

What are your kids eating for lunch today?

I was watching Oprah a while back and saw Dr. Christine Northrup with her new book. I just finished it and wanted to share. It is not a book you can sit down and read cover to cover, I skipped around to the parts that were most relevent to me. I will say it is a must have if you are nearing or over 40 and want some real-life tips on your weight, exercise and vitamins. Check it out.

Manic Monday

It is Thanksgiving week and my kids are out of school. Combine that with my crazy work schedule this short week and that is a recipe for disaster. But...I was watching this piece on the Today Show this morning.

It features Marlo Thomas and her work at St Judes Childrens Research Hospital. It is an amazing place and she is an amazing woman.

So..today think about one thing in your life that you are thankful for. Mine for today is my healthy children. What is yours?

Friday Follies

My son is 10, I understand that taking your lunch to school is not cool in the 5th grade. So, imagine my surprise when he came home today and said, "Mom, I need you to start packing my lunch. Salads and stuff."

So, I said to myself, "Self, who is this kid and what has he done with my son?"

After I checked him for obvious signs of head trauma or illness, I asked him why and he said because they have no "good" junk food and the good for you food they serve sucks(his words, not mine). He refers to it as barfaroni, barfaghetti, peanut butter and barf..you get the picture....

So next week they are on vacation for Thanksgiving, so I will be spared the lunch packing thing, but get ready world my son will be sporting caesar salad, carrot sticks and other healthy items. They grow up too fast.

I found a couple of good sites to give me some ideas....

Tomorrow I am taking my daughter and we are going to get a few gifts for the grandparents. Check it out if, there is ample parking at Coronodo Church and along Peninsula and you can walk the whole street.

New Smyrna Beach Area

I received an email last night asking about our area, New Smyrna Beach has 13.2 miles of beaches, excellent backwater fishing in the Indian River Lagoon, the Marine Discovery Center located on the North Causeway offers tours of the estuary and surrounding river lagoon. It is a great way to see the area marine and wildlife, kids love it!

Bring your boat, the city offers dockage at the marina located near downtown. If you don't have your own boat, the area offers a number of offshore fishing adventures from several different marinas at the end of canal street.

If you are interested in history in the second oldest city in Florida check out the Eldora State House, the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse or visit the Turnbull or Sugarmill Ruins for some local history.

Take a ride on the water taxi between Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach, with several daily roundtrips you can tour the lighthouse and museum and be back for dinner at one of our gorgeous oceanview or riverview restaurants.

If the arts is your thing, New Smyrna Beach was named one of "America's top small cities for the Arts", monthly sidewalk art shows, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Harris House and The Little Theatre offer many opportunities throughout the year to enjoy a variety of rich experiences.

Once you do all that head back to the beach, Volusia County offers some of the best beaches on the east coast, a laid back small town atmosphere and really nice people. Take a walk down Flagler Avenue and check out the gift shops and cafe's.

Accomodations in the area are excellent, there are small motels, private beachfront condos, resorts on the ocean, or bed and breakfast inn's sprinkled throughout the town.

This beautiful area is a great place to visit and an even better place to live!

Rip Currents

Rip Currents are prevalent in our area of Florida, be smart and you will be safe.

When at the beach:

1. Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard protected beach
2. Never swim alone
3. Learn how to swim in the surf. It's not the same as swimming in a pool or lake.
4. Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards. Lifeguards are trained to
identify potential hazards. Ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water. Our lifeguard stands here in Volusia County offer the surf conditions, they can also be found at each drive on beach ramp.
5. Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist along side these structures.
6. Consider using polarized sunglasses when at the beach. They will help you to spot signatures of rip currents by cutting down glare and reflected sunlight off the ocean's surface.
7. Pay especially close attention to children and elderly when at the beach. Even in shallow water, wave action can cause loss of footing.

If caught in a rip current:

1. Remain calm to conserve energy and think clearly.
2. Never fight the current.
3. Think of it like a treadmill that cannot be turned off, of which you need to step to the side.
4. Swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim at an angle -- away from the current -- towards shore.
5. If you are unable to swim out of the rip current, float or calmly tread water. When out of the current, swim towards shore.
6. If you are still unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself by waving your arm and yelling for help.

If you see someone in trouble, don't become a victim:

1. Get help from a lifeguard.
2. If a lifeguard is not available, have someone call 9-1-1.
3. Throw the rip current victim something that floats -- a lifejacket, a cooler, an inflatable ball.
4. Yell instructions on how to escape.
5. Remember, many people drown while trying to save someone else from a rip current.

Battens Disease

These two beautiful little boys have Batten's Disease, this is not a well known disease but causes blindness, seizures and has a variety of other symptoms, it results in death, there is no cure. I have been lucky enough to know these boys and their wonderful parents. My children went to school with them in NC. We were involved in helping with a few fundraisers and got to know the family a bit.

Please take a look at their website www.ourboysjourney.com and get to know them too. They are selling cookbooks for a fundraiser and they have t-shirts etc that you can purchase if you wish.

But most importantly, read the blog, go through the website, get to know them and say a prayer tonight for these little boys and their family. Then thank the lord that your children are healthy.

Holiday Organization

Throughout the year I follow the Flylady principles. This makes is fairly easy to roll into the holidays. But this year we moved, I have a garage full of stuff, a storage unit, closets that are not organized on it goes....

So I started today organizing one thing at a time. I thought I would do the kitchen today, HA, did not happen,I realized quickly I had to take it in pieces. I did the pantry. Just the pantry.

1. Remove everything, clean the shelves and doors inside and out
2. Discard anything that has expired
3. If you have not used it in a reasonable amount of time, toss it.
4. Put like items together, canned good, snacks, pasta, condiments, etc.

Now I can find everything, my kids can find the snacks, it is clean and neat. A few minutes a week to keep it that way, and to put things away properly after a trip to the grocery store will keep you together.

Flylady would be proud...now on to the refrigerator....
