Women volunteers will raise their hammers, nail
guns and paintbrushes at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the
country in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 5-13.
Now in its sixth year, National Women Build Week
challenges women to devote at least one day to help create simple, decent and
affordable housing in their local communities. Over 31,000 women volunteers
from all 50 states have participated in the previous five events.
This year, we will help prepare a house for a
local family in Edgewater, and promote recruitment of volunteer women from age
18 up to help support Habitat’s mission to create affordable housing. We will
have a second women’s day later in the year, where we will assist in
construction of a new home.
To date, women volunteers have helped construct more
than 2000 Habitat houses nationwide. Locally, Southeast Volusia Habitat for
Humanity has served more than 100 families, building 98 homes and rehabilitating
others through “Brush with Kindness” and other home repair programs. Women have
routinely contributed their time and talents to the work in our community and
this year we are continuing this work by celebrating Mother’s day through a day
of woman’s fellowship, working together to help provide a decent home and safe
environment for a local family.
National
Women Build Week is held the week leading up to Mother’s Day because of its significance
to Habitat homeowners and volunteers. Families with children make up a
staggering number of those in need of adequate housing. More than 12 million
children - one in six - live in poverty housing in the United States alone.
Ladies, please join us in our efforts. Put on
your oldest clothes and sneakers, pick up your brushes and rollers, grab a pot
of paint, and join your sisters in celebrating the Power of Women, giving back
to families in need in our own community.
