Tailgate'n Party

Support Marine Discovery Center on January 11th with their annual Tailgate'n Party! This is the center's biggest fundraiser of the year and is always a great time! For $30.00 you can enjoy some tasty food from local restaurants, door prizes, raffles and a silent auction...oh and football with friends!

MDC Haunted House

This looks super fun! I love Marine Discovery Center! Take a walk through the Haunted House then Trick or Treat in the adjoining neighborhood Venezia. They put on a super Halloween for the kids. That is where my kids always went(before they got too big and cool to trick or treat). Or reverse it and Trick or Treat first and then check out the Haunted House!

Marine Discovery Center Vacation Day Camp

Marine Discovery Center located on Barracuda Blvd near the North Causeway is holding some vacation Day camps. Great place to drop the kids while you work or recover from the Christmas festivities. I guarantee they will have a blast. This was my kids favorite place in the summer when they were younger,

 The camps are:

Friday, December 21, 2012 8:00 am-3:00 pm 
Thursday and Friday, December 27, 2012 and 28th 8:00 am-3:00 pm 

The camps are for children ages 5 - 14 and will include kayaking, plankton activities, invertebrate discoveries, seine netting, birding, and more.

The cost is $35.00. Reservations required check their website for more details or to make reservations.

 

Tailgate 'n Party

Marine Discovery Center is holding a Tailgate 'n Party this Saturday, January 16th at The Brannon Center. Come out from 4-8pm and enjoy football on the big screen, buffet, exotic beer tasting, door prizes and raffles. All proceeds will benefit the wonderful programs at Marine Discovery. Marine Discovery Center~Winter Camp

On December 21 and 22, 2009, Marine Discovery Center will hold a Winter Camp from 8am-3pm. The cost is $60 per camper

Activities will include: Kayaking, Team Building Challenges, GPS Ecocaching, Plankton Investigations, Invertebrate Discoveries, Beach Seine Netting and more.

Reservations and payments are required by December 11, 2009

Both of my children attend the summer camp programs at Marine Discovery and they have fantastic programs, I am sure this one will be no different!

Marine Discovery Center

My daughter came home from camp today talking about the ecosystem, her encounter with a manatee, a stone crab with no claws and her upcoming trip to the Crystal River.

It was Marine Discovery Center Camp and it is one of the best camps our area has to offer. The education department at the Center led by Chad Truxall is fantastic. This is the second year my children have attended and if you only spring for one camp this summer this one is worth the price.

Weekend Look Ahead

This weekend is the Art Walk on Flagler, it is the Christmas in July event which is always great fun, lots of vendors, food and fun. Get a jump on your Christmas shopping with local artists and vendors. They will be open from 10am-5pm but come early, the afternoon rains are back for sure.

Someone emailed me about Kayaking. There are a couple of options for that. The Marine Discovery Center now offers kayaks and canoes, you can get a guided tour or rent and go off on your own. Another one located in Port Orange is Cracker Creek Canoeing. They offer kayaking, tours, boat rides and all sort of other fun activites.

You can also take the Water Taxi over to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse they have a great gift shop, there is a nice restaurant and if you are brave and healthy you can climb the 211 steps to the top of the lighthouse!

They Are Out There~part 2

I took my son the 11 year old surfer dude to the beach yesterday, great day, not to crowded, he and a friend surfed for awile and then came in to throw a football around. The beach patrol went flying by lights and sirens blaring, and stopped about 20 feet from us up the beach. So of course the nosy boys had to go see what was happening, meanwhile some lady goes running by yelling shark, shark, get the kids out of the water. I am thinking shut up lady. The funny part was no one was jumping up and running or responding to her attempt to incite a riot.

The boys came back to inform me that indeed a guy was sitting on his board and got bit by "something, about 4 feet long" and it was a superficial wound, the beach patrol provided first aid and he was reclining on a beach chair. I am not sure if he went on to the hospital, but since there was no front page news screaming about the "shark bite capitol of the world" I am guessing not.

I asked the boys if they were ready to go, they looked at me like I was nuts, picked up their boards and headed for the water. I am not sure if I should be happy they are not scared or nervous.

Did you know that more people are killed each year by falling vending machines than shark attacks? Thanks to the Marine Discovery Center summer camp for that piece of shark trivia.
