Hell's Kitchen

Danny the chef from our very own Flip Flops is still in the running on Hell's Kitchen. Tonight also just happens to be the Grand Opening of the "new" Flip Flops in the old Shells beachside. The Fox News truck was there this morning at 8:30 am so this is a pretty big deal for our teeny tiny town. I hear from pretty reliable sources that many of the Hell's Kitchen contestants will be in attendance tonight. The show is on Fox tonight at 9pm.

For The Kids

This Wednesday at 3pm The New Smyrna Beach Regional Library will celebrate spring with a “Magical Tea Party”.

Children in grades K - 5 are invited to wear party clothes or dress up as their favorite magical creature, superhero or book character. Snacks will be served, and children are asked to bring their own cup and saucer for the tea party.

A fairy queen will preside over a cow parade in which the Chick-Fil-A cow will lead a group of cow puppets around the auditorium. There also will be special visits from a fairy cow and Antonia, the face painter. Other activities will include a wishing well and games.

Pre-registration is requested by Tuesday and may be made at the children’s desk or by calling (386) 424-2910, ext. 111.

The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Chick-Fil-A and Cow Licks.

Around Town~Weekend Events

There is almost too much to do this weekend. We should have gorgeous weather for it so get out and enjoy!

The 2009 Relay for Life is this weekend. The local event is being held at Riverside Park. As of right now Southeast Volusia has raised over $26,000 dollars for this effort. If you are not participating in the actual walk please support one of our local teams.

This Saturday Gilly's Pub 44 will hold a Beer and Blues Festival at their location on Rt 44 in New Smyrna Beach.

Flips Flops will hold a benefit for the Marine Discovery Center on Sunday at their NEW location (the old Shells Beachside). It will feature a 7 course Hawaiian Buffet and silent acution. Tickets are $25.00 and are available at the Marine Discovery Center. Don't miss Danny on Hell's Kitchen on Fox, as of this moment he is still in the running for the big prize!

Saturday is also Florida Lighthouse Day. Visit Ponce Inlet from 10am-2pm and celebrate with lots of family activities, new exhibits and live entertainment.

The monthly Art Walk on Flagler is this Saturday from 10am-5pm. The theme this month is RECYCLED. There is plenty of parking at Coronado Methodist Church and the Flagler Beach approach. Several galleries are having free wine and cheese from 3pm-5pm.

Riverside Catering on Orange St is holding a cooking class for children on Saturday from 10am-12pm. The cost is 30.00 call to reserve a spot at 386-409-5588. The theme is snacks. There is a limit of 20 students per class.

The Little Theatre has "Driving Miss Daisy" this weekend. Contact the box office for tickets.

It's Kids Baseball!

My son plays baseball, Little League Baseball, this is the third year of the Southeast Volusia Little League (SEVLL), they are based in Edgewater at Hawks Park. They have a great group of volunteers that make it possible for our local children to play Little League Baseball.

Sounds great right? My son has been involved in competitive sports since he was 4. I have served on the board of a rec sports league in another state. I am always amazed by some of the things I hear at the games.

Parents are the best. Most parents are really good, they encourage the kids, cheer for both teams and generally make it a positive experience. But there are always a couple bad apples, it never fails, you get parents who don't like the coach, their kid does not play enough, they think the umps are lousy..blah, blah, blah......

This weekend I observed one coach being berated by a parent, he was pointing in his face, he was just plain abusive about the amount of playing time his child got. A mother of a child on the winning team sat right behind the backstop laughing about the losing team. Wow what a great example she is setting for her children. This is not the first time I have seen things like this and I am always amazed. This morning I heard one of our board members car was vandalized with dead fish. Are you kidding me?

This is Little League folks, kids baseball. These coaches and board members are VOLUNTEERS. VOLUNTEERS, let me say it again in case you missed it the first time. They are not getting paid to spend countless hours coaching your kids, some (most) of the kids they coach are not exactly major league material but they make the best of it and everyone plays. It is supposed to be fun. FUN. FUN. One more time FUN.

Everyone is doing the best they can and I am certain that not one of the whiners and complainers can do a better job. In fact, I suggest that those spending their time being negative and sometimes just mean get out there and volunteer to help, get on the board, coach a team. Do something positive.

Sunday Stumble

What a gorgeous weekend we had at the beach! My son and I went to church today at Edgewater Alliance. They were talking about a program they had for elementary age children during spring break, from 7am-530pm every day during break they had a Spring Break Camp at the church. They had 74 children attend and the high school age youth volunteered to help. Yes, I said volunteered. They gave up their entire spring break to assist with arts and crafts, games, music and worship for 74 elementary children from our community. Some were children of parishioners, some were children from the community. Get this, it was free. There was no charge to parents for an entire week of fun for their kids and peace of mind knowing where they were during break. I find this to be amazing, not just that the church offered this to the community for free but that they found high school kids, many of them boys to volunteer to make birdhouses, get pies in the face and suffer all sorts of indignities that only elementary age children can dish out. WOW, what a wonderful place!

Happy Saturday

Good morning! Gorgeous day at the beach but very windy, be careful of rip currents this weekend at the beach. Always swim near the lifeguards!

The weekly Farmer's Market is going on til 12:30 pm on Canal Street. Great local produce, the bread guy is there and the orchid lady.

Be careful when driving thru school zones, the police are patrolling the zone on Saxon near Coronado Elementary each afternoon both right before school gets out and after. Not only do you not want a ticket but you don't want to injure a child.

Support Volusia County Sports

The team continues to work hard to raise $100,000 for Volusia County Schools to support our spring JV Sports, Academic Fairs, and Performing Arts Events. To date, $75,000 has been raised.

Come out this Saturday, April 18th to Daytona Toyota (451 N. Nova Rd, Daytona Beach) or DeLand Dodge/Kia (2322 S. Woodland Blvd, DeLand) have generously offered to give our cause $20 for each person that takes a test drive on Saturday at their dealerships. The event will run from 10 am - 6 pm so you can go anytime during those hours.

In addition, NASCAR driver, Mike Skinner, will be at Daytona Toyota from 1-4 pm for a "meet & greet." This is a free event and will benefit our kids here in Volusia County.

Please come out and support our schools. Bring your friends. Student drivers can test drive too if they have an accompanying parent.

Lots to do at the beach, it is a great day for the International Food Festival on Flagler Ave.

Cracker Creek's Pirate Cruise: Featuring the Pirates of Spruce Creek, cruises are held at 1 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday at 1795 Taylor Road, Port Orange. Costumed pirates create a live, interactive experience as young buccaneers learn navigation, pirate weaponry, knotting or rope tying and pirate lingo, all the while searching for the lost treasure at Spruce Creek. Pre-registration is required by calling (386) 304-0778. Also, the Snow White Cottage, a near-replica as seen in the 1937 Walt Disney animated classic "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," is located on the Gamble property. Saturday, April 18th is Project Earth Day: Peace & Environmental festival from 10am-4pm at the United Church of Christ, 203 Washington Street, New Smyrna Beach. Free admission! Fun for all ages! Food, live entertainment, music, fair trade goods, yoga, massage chairs, peace, environmental and wellness exhibits. Children’s activities featuring Rae Rae the red panda from the PBS series Enviropals. Balloon animals, face painting, and a magic show.

This event is a benefit for Volusia PeaceCenter and the Marine Discovery Center.

St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church is holding a gourmet dinner on Friday to benefit Lydia’s Mission, the outreach program providing direct and consultative advocacy services to seniors in the New Smyrna Beach community. Seatings at 6:00 or 7:00pm. Tickets are $30 per person. Free child care available. Tickets may be purchased by calling the church office Monday-Thursday, 9am-1pm, 386-428-7383.

Meals on Wheels Walk The Council on Aging will be celebrating and fundraising for the Meals on Wheels Program and associated services with a WALKathon. This fun event will take place Friday, April 17th at the Brannon Center in New Smyrna Beach at 10:00am. This event includes a short walk, a fun picnic with hot dogs, hamburgers, music and a round of door prizes provided by generous area merchants. Special this year will be dance performances by the troop from the Dance Factory. These “dancing girls” will bring both tears and laughter to all who attend. They would like a big show of support for this event.

Plan ahead to attend the Halifax/Indian River Cleanup Day on May 2nd.

International Food Festival

This Thursday from 5-9pm come on down to Flagler Avenue for the International Food Festival. Restaurants from around Volusia County will be providing samples and tastes of their fantastic food and drink. There will be live entertainment and contests. The weather should be great for this 4 hour event. There is ample parking available at the Flagler Ave Beach approach as well as the Coronado United Methodist Church.

Easter Weekend Events

This weekend will be a busy one at the beach.

The Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity will be hosting a Casino Night with blackjack, texas hold ‘em, slots, craps this Saturday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will be held at Pub 44 in NSB. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the Habitat Thrift Store on 722 S. Dixie Freeway during store hours (Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. To 4 p.m.). Lots of prizes and fun, come on out and support Habitat.

Berean Bible Church is hosting their annual Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 12 at 7 a.m. At the gazebo on Riverside Drive in NSB. There will be an entire hour of congregational singing, special music, and great preaching. Refreshments will be served following the service. Seating is limited, so come early. This Saturday night at 7:30, the Brighthouse Challenge will be held at New Smyrna Speedway. The Easter Bunny will be there and they will have an Easter Egg hunt for the kids.

Ruthy's

I have never eaten at Ruthy's in New Smyrna Beach, they are located at 618 Canal Street, that is across US1, across the street from the health department. I have had two different people tell me about their experiences at Ruthy's so I felt I should share.

The first was a few months ago, someone I know went to lunch at Ruthy's, this individual said they had bad service, good food. This past weekend a local business owner took his girlfriend there for breakfast. It was very busy and they were told it would be about a 15 minute wait for their food. After an hour of waiting, he asked his server where the food was. (He was more patient than I am). The server was very nice, apologized and said she would check. The explanation was that they had ordered a "difficult breakfast." Since it was a special on the menu, he was a tad skeptical at that response as many people came in after them and were done with breakfast and had left the restaurant.

The server went back again to check and returned to tell him that the cook said that is how it was and that they could wait till the food came or leave, when he asked to see the Manager, he discovered that Ruthy was the manager and the cook. Ruthy did come out and speak to this customer, who by the way is black, his girlfriend is white. When he pointed out to Ruthy that everyone else had been served except them, she became upset and told him to leave and she would pray for him. Needless to say this new business owner in our community is not impressed with our hospitality and actually wondered if this was because he is black.

I am curious if anyone else has had an experience like this in this restaurant or any other in our community. I am also interested in any good or bad experiences in any of our local businesses, whether you are a resident or a visitor everyone should be treated with respect.

Easter Celebration

First Baptist Church of New Smyrna Beach will hold an Easter Celebration this Sunday. It will be open to all and include dinner and activities for children. They are located on Sams Ave, New Smyrna Beach.

Venetian Bay United Methodist Church will hold Easter Services at 10am. They are located just off Pioneer Trail behind the fountain when you enter Venetian Bay.

April 12 for 12K Challenge

The 12for12k Challenge is the combination of social media and fund-raising that aims to change the lives of millions worldwide. By harnessing the power of social media and its unparalleled networking tools, 12for12k looks to bring hope and optimism to those who need it most.

By using the power and outreach of social media to spread the word, many less fortunate people will be helped.

Wonderful things have happened in 2009. War Child, Stop the Silence were the first two charities to be aided by 12for12K. Then in March an amazing thing happened. 12for12K unleashed the power of Twitter and raised over $15,000 for Share Our Strength, which is committed to see that no child in the US is ever hungry.

This month, 12for12K is joining forces with Mom It Forward to support Yehu.org. Which is helping mothers and families in Rural Kenya. Read about them and the wonderful things they do and go to 12for12k if you would like to support them or any of the other charities supported by 12for12K.

Spring Break!

Volusia County Schools are on break this week and not a moment too soon. The kids need a break from homework, teachers and most of all each other!


What are you doing for fun this week while on the kids are home? Some obvious things are the beach....the beach and the beach. When you get sick of the beach, take the kids for a ride on the Water Taxi, or take a Manatee Cruise. Maybe go fishing with Indian River Lagoon Fishing.

Hidden Lakes Golf Course has great deals on golf and a Public Pool. Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is always a good little trip.

Take a stroll down Flagler, you will need to stroll since not one more car will fit today. Big traffic backups both ways on the North Causeway.

Nautilus By The Sea

The only gym beachside has a great special going on. No money down and $28.00 per month. That is less than $1.00 per day. You cannot get a Bagel at Bagel World for that, or a cup of coffee at the Flagler Coffee House. What do you get for less than a dollar? The cleanest gym I have ever been in..friendly staff, friendly customers, treadmills, bikes, eliptical machines, free weights, nautilus circuit machines, a free week of personal training with one of the best around. I am a member at Nautilus and highly recommend it. They are open just about every day, not 24 hours a day but long hours, they are beachside and have a great atmosphere. They have a new website that provides all the details. Not to mention Subway is in the same plaza, Publix is next door, go work out then shop. What could be better!!

Around Town-Weekend Events

There is plenty to do at the beach this weekend. The annual Horsin' Around Auction to benefit the Atlantic Center for the Arts is Sunday, April 5 from 11am-4pm. Tickets are 100.00 each it will held at the NSB Municipal Airport.

If that event is too rich for your blood there are many other things to do.

Ce-La-Luna Restaurant in Eddgewater will host Michael T and the "Oldies Revue" on Saturday, April 4th beginning at 6pm.

Coronado Community United Methodist Church will hold their children's Easter Egg Hunt, Saturday April 4th at 10am. This is open to infants to 3rd grade age children. Come to the education building.

The Landshark Surfari Pro Tournament starts today at the Inlet at 9am.

The New Smyrna Beach Board of Realtors is holding a golf tournament to benefit several community programs on Friday, April 3. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at Hidden Lakes Golf Club, 35 Fairgreen Avenue. The tournament will be in a scramble format and shotgun starts at 1 p.m. There will be food, drinks, and door prizes. Military Appreciation Night

The New Smyrna Beach High School baseball team invites you to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices made by our men and women of the military. Members and veterans of the armed forces will be in attendance. Join the ‘Cudas on Friday, April 3 beginning at 4 p.m. at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. The admission fee will be waived in lieu of donations to the NSBHS baseball program. The National Guard will provide a rock climbing wall, football throw, and basketball shot to entertain all.

Dog Wash

Head on over to Silly Willie's for a Dog Wash to benefit The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Relay for Life, this will be held on Saturday, April 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be prizes for tiniest, largest, hairiest, and dirtiest dogs.
